What I love most about being a defense attorney is when I have a client break down in tears of joy as a result of receiving a favorable result on their case.  Being charged with a crime and having that hang over your head can be a very stressful and painful process.  When I can use my knowledge and expertise to help someone overcome an uncomfortable situation such as being charged with a crime, it makes this line of work worth it.  

 

I was born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri.  I moved to Syracuse for my undergraduate studies at Syracuse University.  I studied Journalism where I gained experience as a TV News reporter, covering stories throughout Central New York involving cyber crime, nuclear power safety, climate change, and local politics.  My time studying journalism was the best preparation for public speaking that I would later conduct in the courtroom.  

 

After I graduated Summa Cum Laude from Syracuse University, I went on to receive my Juris Doctorate from Syracuse University College of Law.  I worked at the Onondaga District Attorney’s office where I was responsible for performing legal research on DWI cases, trial strategy, and appeals.  I also worked at the Disability Rights Clinic in Syracuse where I provided representation to individuals with disabilities.  My cases involved public accessibility, reasonable accommodations, and hostile work environments.    

 

Prior to founding Hakan Legal Defense, I worked for Tom Anelli & Associates for 3 years as an Associate where I received over 250 5 star Google Reviews from clients.  I conducted multiple trials and represented clients charged with misdemeanors and felonies.  

 

I take great pride in my work as a defense attorney.  I would not be here without the great mentors I’ve had along with the way who have taught me how to receive the best possible results for clients.
